Brisbane Green Factor has been developed to suit and reflect the local climate. It measures all forms of greening on a development site and assists to deliver increased vegetation within the city’s development.
Brisbane is Australia’s third largest city with a population of 2.2 million people and like much of the country, it is experiencing rapid urbanisation and densification. There is an opportunity to protect and enhance vegetation and greening through urban development. As such, Brisbane City Council is motivated to ensure that development provides a level of green infrastructure to support biodiversity, increase community amenity and resilience, and create a strong sense of identity.
Brisbane Green Factor provides urban development practitioners with a clear methodology to assess the quality of any proposed green infrastructure in new developments, to optimise landscape designs and maximise the ecosystem services they provide in the context Brisbane City Council’s strategic priorities.
How Council is using Brisbane Green Factor
Brisbane Green Factor is voluntary, but as the city grows, there is an opportunity to use the urban development process improve green space, to restore lost biodiversity and address increasingly urgent issues such as urban heat and stormwater quality. There is also an opportunity to enhance Brisbane’s identity as a lush, green, sub-tropical city.
Brisbane City Council encourages developers and designers to use Brisbane Green Factor on the following building types:

- hotel or other accommodation
- retail, shop or service
- shopping centre
- public building
- community facilities
- commercial office
- light industrial or warehouse
- service station
